Quality Education
As School Superintendent Carlos Garcia told the Chronicle, " I don't think schools can fix everything. We can have after-school programs and all kinds of things, but kids still have to go home, and they need good homes to go home to."
The first duty of the Board of Supervisors is to do everything in their power to see that those kids do have good homes to go home to - stable, affordable, safe homes, where the parents or parent have a reliable, adequate income in a community which is safe. I have successfully run programs which achieve those goals, and I will certainly be working to achieve similar successes on a District-wide and City-wide basis. I would also make sure the city is doing all it can to support the SFUSD. Our school district faces severe budget cuts this year, and it will take full-time leadership on the School Board and help from the Board of Supervisors to weather this crisis.
Having worked at E.R. Taylor School, I have strong feelings about supporting and encouraging the schools in our District. I think the Supervisor should 'adopt' our schools, such as E.R. Taylor and others, working with them to develop leadership among the students, staff and the parents to improve their schools and the neighborhoods.
