Violence Prevention and Public Safety

I have successfully run programs that increased community safety at affordable housing sites, and I have given this subject much thought.

The first element of successful violence prevention and increased public safety is the creation of real and stable communities. Violence prevention and increased public safety are not separate from the preservation and expansion of affordable housing, treatment programs, economic and educational opportunities and the preservation and encouragement of neighborhood-serving businesses.

As Supervisor, I will support adequate funding to end repeat offending through re-entry programs, such as the DA's Back on Track program and the Public Defender's Clean Slate Program. - taking money from other programs, such as the Gang Injunction program, which studies have shown absolutely do not work. I will work to improve the services that exist and work to expand programs that are succeeding in providing opportunity and hope for young people in our communities, and I will do everything I can to encourage the Mayor and the Police Commission to reform and reconstitute the clearly dysfunctional management of the San Francisco Police Department.
